Like mechanical engineering, chess develops critical thinking, problem solving, and strategic planning skills that can be applied far beyond the game. In this engaging two hour programme, girls are introduced to the fundamentals of chess, including the names of each piece, how they move, and their relative value on the board. Participants will also begin to think like engineers through a hands on activity where they build their own spinner to determine who plays as Black and who plays as White. This simple but interactive exercise introduces basic design thinking while making the learning experience fun and memorable. Throughout the session, girls are encouraged to think independently, test ideas, and learn from their decisions in a supportive environment. Chess offers a powerful way to build confidence, resilience, and focus, helping girls develop skills that support both academic and personal growth.

No prior chess experience is required, making this programme accessible to complete beginners. All activities are conducted using a virtual chessboard, so there is no need for any physical materials. At the end of the programme, participants will earn their Mechanical Engineering Board Games for Daisies Badge, which can be purchased from the Girl Scout Shop. Each participant earns a chess patch with a pawn charm, which will be mailed directly to their home.
