Coding Badges 1, 2 & 3 for Seniors
Join STEM the Gap Academy for an engaging 2.5 hour workshop where Girl Scouts can work toward earning their Coding Basics, Digital Game Design, and App Development badges. This hands-on session introduces participants to the foundations of coding through real-world application and guided exploration. Girls will learn core concepts such as JavaScript syntax, functions, arguments, x y coordinates, Boolean logic, IF statements, and control flow in a way that feels approachable and empowering.
Throughout the workshop, participants will move beyond theory and into creation. They will design their own simple games, explore the fundamentals of app development, and learn how to collect and analyse data to inform their ideas. Each activity is structured to build both technical understanding and confidence, ensuring that every participant feels supported as she learns something new.
The experience is centred on problem-solving and creative thinking. Girls are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and iterate on their work, helping them develop resilience and a growth mindset. In addition to building coding skills, the workshop introduces the concept of using technology for social impact. Participants will explore how digital tools can be used to address real challenges and make a meaningful difference in their communities.
No prior coding experience is required. The workshop is designed to meet girls where they are, making it accessible for beginners while still engaging for those with some familiarity. By the end of the session, participants will walk away with a stronger understanding of coding, game design, and app development, along with the confidence to continue exploring STEM.
