Coding Badges 2 & 3 for Juniors
In the Digital Game Design and App Development badge class, Juniors will take a hands-on approach to understanding how games are built from the ground up while working toward earning their Digital Game Design and App Development badges. Rather than focusing only on code, this session centres on how ideas are structured, tested, and turned into interactive experiences.
Participants will explore how instructions guide outcomes, using coding concepts to control movement, timing, and decision points within a game. As they begin shaping their own maze-style game, they will think through how a player moves, what obstacles exist, and how choices affect the outcome. This process introduces them to the logic behind gameplay, where every action is intentional and designed.
The class places a strong emphasis on iteration. Girls will test their games, identify what is working, and adjust their designs to improve the experience. This builds an understanding that technology is rarely perfect on the first try, and that refining ideas is a key part of development. It also encourages patience and persistence as they work through challenges.
Alongside the technical work, the session creates space for creativity. Juniors are invited to make decisions about how their game feels, what story it tells, and how users interact with it. This balance between structure and imagination helps them see that coding is not only logical, but expressive.
The class also introduces role models in computer science, reinforcing that girls belong in these spaces. By the end of the session, participants will have built and refined their own game while developing a stronger sense of ownership over what they create and how they think through problems..
